Melbourne Pub Poker League Reviews

In this blog I’d like to give you all a quick review from all the different poker leagues in Melbourne.I have personally played with all the leagues through out my time and found that they all have their own positive and negative sides but that is for you to decide.

And I would like to start off with the poker league sharks of Australia.
The APL. This league was one of the first to launch in Melbourne with some amazing prizes.
When you play in the APL you really have to commit yourself to the points week after week to advance from your nightly games. I suggest you find yourself a pub with good quality players without any donks. So not only do you have good competition but you also don’t get bad beats on every hand.
To quickly sum the APL up it’s a league that can get you good dollars and opportunities if you are prepared to stick it out.

This next league is one of my favorite witch changed its name from NPL to 888PL.

I recently grown to love this league not just for what they offer but also the quality of players I have seen and the cash buy in tournaments.
Its run on the points system like the APL but the beauty of it is that you can play away games ( live ) or home games ( online ) this gives players a chance to experience both live and online. I really think this league has some of the best players in the pub poker league and I love their cash buy in tournaments.

The National Pub Poker League (NPPL) was the league I have stuck with for a long time while playing. I stuck with it because I got to know a lot of players and I really liked the tournament structure with 4k in chips and 25/50 starting blinds. Obviously you can add onto your chip stack through buying a meal or drink. They hold monthly finals which are worth attending to try and make some easy money and advance to national. The tournament hosts are really friendly and they have heaps of venues across Melbourne.

Poker Nights is a league that not many have heard of but it is gaining more and more interest. Poker Nights is ideal for the deep stack players that like the ShootOut tournaments. Buy one drink and your starting stack is 10k with 100/200 blinds buy a second drink and you get a rebuy/add on for 5k.
The owner and hosts will always tell you the the shootout tournaments are the best thing ever witch I believe is complete bull shit but it’s just something different to play.
Nightly winners win a satellite seat to stage one in the next crown main event. The top 5 earn a spot into the monthly with around 1.5 k in the prize pool. Top 5 I think on the leader board in points get invited to the Grand Final as well as the monthly winners. (Correct me if I’m wrong)

Pub Poker is one of the first leagues I started to play. The league is run on heats and drinks you buy. You get points when you buy a drink or top 10 on the felt.
They normally run 2 heats and then a final table in a night. I think it’s the top 3 of each heat advance to the final table. All the points you earn go towards the monthly final witch advances you to the grand. They have great prizes in the Grand Final such as year’s worth of beer, WSOP entry and accommodation, Plasma TV and cash prizes. This league has a few donkey players but it’s a great league to start in.
